The land of the long white cloud a.k.a New Zealand Part I - Tauranga
We arrived in Auckland, New Zealand 11 days ago, rented a car in downtown Auckland, and drove straight to Tauranga. We ate lunch before we left Auckland, and I went to sleep as soon as we got out of town. Because we did not sleep much on the plane, Rob got sleepy after driving for 45 minutes so he pulled in to a parking lot to sleep it off. I can't sleep if the car is not moving so I decided to drive, which woke him up instead of letting him sleep. The road was windy, two lanes high ways with lots of container trucks, and the car was sounding alarm if I got too close to the road dividers. And I have not been driving for one and half years plus New Zealanders drive on the left side. Because I was sleeping the whole time, I did not realize the road conditions. After driving for twenty minutes, I pulled over to a spot where we can rest, take some photos, and switched with him since he was fully awake instead of sleeping while I drove. Obviously, I scared the crap out of him. So I went back to sleep after a little bit until he stopped again in Matamata because he was getting too sleepy again. The kids were very much asleep by then so just two of us walked around, got some coffee and cookies, saw some Vietnamese working at a cafe. Then we drove another hour and arrived at our gorgeous AirBnB place by the beach in Tauranga.
December is New Zealand's summer but it was rainy and cool. And we loved it. I think I came here once in winter but I can't recall that time and I like cooler weather so drizzly, cool temperature was a perfect weather for me.
Tauranga is about three hours drive from Auckland, and a beautiful beach town. Rob tried to surf but not much luck as the waves were small except once he managed to get some good rides. I cooked, read (actually listened to) a book, teach kids Burmese, write my Burmese textbook. I even roasted a lamb for the first time. We picked fruits, visited the Hobbington village, hiked Mount Maunganui, Moturiki island, and walked on the beach. Five days went by quickly like that and we were on the roads again to Auckland this time.
